Frank Darabont’s “The Shawshank Redemption” is a timeless tale of hope and friendship. Based on Stephen King’s novella, it stars Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne, a man wrongly imprisoned for murder, and Morgan Freeman as Red, his close friend. This epic instalment of the Batman franchise revolutionised the superhero genre with its dark, complex narrative and brilliant performances, especially Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning portrayal of the Joker. If you love Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling (who doesn’t?), then you probably loved “La La Land”. Directed by Damien Chazelle, the modern musical romance is full of vibrant visuals and amazing music. It took home six Oscars, including Best Director and Best Actress for Stone. Famously, it was mistakenly announced as Best Picture before the award actually went to “Moonlight.”
“Moonlight” (2016)

Speaking of “Moonlight,” this coming-of-age story also makes it on the list of must-sees. But a late-night award correction on the night of the 2017 Oscars isn’t what makes this film memorable. Its beautiful storytelling and stunning cinematography does. The film chronicles the life of a young black man grappling with his identity and sexuality and earned three Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali.
“American Beauty” (1999)

Finishing the list with a recent Oscar-nominee. “Barbie” was just released on Netflix, which means those who saw it in theatres can relive the colourful, chaotic, thought-provoking world of Barbie and Ken all over again. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film is a surprising reimagining of the iconic doll’s story. Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the film takes viewers on a whimsical journey through Barbie’s world as she finds independence. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll love every second.
