It’s all about the psychological thrillers on Apple TV+ this July, including one of the final roles of the late Ray Liotta.
Based on the true crime memoir “In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, And A Dangerous Bargain For Redemption” by James Keene, the six-part “Black Bird” premieres on July 8th. The series is in more than capable hands, with master of the mystery thriller Dennis Lehane (“Gone Baby Gone”, “Shutter Island”, “Mystic River”) developing the memoir for television.
Taron Egerton leads the cast as Jimmy Keene, sentenced to 10 years in prison, who cuts a deal with the FBI to befriend and interrogate a suspected serial killer. It’s up to Keene to coax a confession out of Hall in order to find the bodies of as many as 18 victims.
Black Bird is also notable for being the first posthumous release of the late, great Ray Liotta, with the actor wrapping up filming shortly before his death last month.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw, star of Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show”, gets her own flagship series on the streaming platform in July. The actress co-produces and stars in the intense psychological thriller “Surface”, which follows a woman who suffers extreme memory loss following a traumatic head injury, believes to be the result of a suicide attempt.
As she tries to put the pieces of her life back together with the help of her husband and friends, she begins to question whether or not the truth she is told is actually the truth she has lived.
Surface is the creation of Veronica West, co-creator of the underrated television adaptation of “High Fidelity”. The first episode hits Apple TV+ on July 29th.
