Several intriguing new series and some returning favourites are making their way from Britain to Australian television screens on BritBox in September.

On the first of the month, “Hullraisers” places female characters front and centre of the quirky new sitcom. An adaptation of the popular Israeli sitcom, “Haverot”, the series follows the hilarious journey of three women from Northern English town Hull (hence the punny title).

Considering the past success rate in adapting Israeli shows in other countries – “Homeland” and “In Treatment” to name just two – hopes should be high for “Hullraisers”. It’s also being penned by acclaimed local comedian Lucy Beaumont, who’s based much of her standup routines on life in Hull and the rest of Northern England.

September 20th sees the arrival of the third season of “McDonald & Dodds”, a quintessentially British crime drama. The series follows the titular detectives, two mismatched characters – she’s young and ambitious, he’s ageing and reserved – that overcome their differences to form an amiable friendship and successful work partnership.

Incredibly, “McDonald & Dodds” is only on its eight episode in three seasons – again, how very British – which means there’s lots of life in these Bath-set series yet.

Another curious crime drama, this one led by “Being Human” and “The Hobbit” star Aidan Turner, arrives on BritBox on September 8th. The Irish actor plays Doctor Joe O’Loughlin in “The Suspect”, a respected clinical psychologist who seemingly boasts a perfect life.

When he partners with a detective in order to solve a potential murfder, however, his involvement raises more questions than answers. “The Suspect” comes from World Productions, who will be hoping that the series achieves even a sliver of the global success of its other show, “Line of Duty”.
