Netflix has snapped up a new Australian documentary ahead of its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

The four-part series, “2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback,” is produced by Blackfella Films for SBS and NITV and is the only documentary among the 10 series selected globally for TIFF’s Primetime program.

The logline states: “A landmark documentary series examining the events and far-reaching repercussions of the two fatal shots fired in 2.6 seconds that ended the life of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker, and forced a national reckoning with justice, policing and race in Australia.”

“Some stories stay with you long after the screening, and ‘2.6 Seconds’ is one of those,” Amanda Duthie, Content Director Netflix ANZ said.

“Netflix is honoured to bring this deeply moving Australian documentary to Netflix audiences around the world, giving a powerful and important story the opportunity to resonate far beyond our shores.”

Blackfella Films producer, Darren Dale, added: “’2.6 Seconds’ is a shocking story about the collision of race and power that is uniquely Australian but one I’ve always believed also has global resonance. Netflix coming on board ahead of our TIFF premiere is confirmation of that belief and I cannot wait to see how international audiences respond to this powerful series.”

The documentary is expected to premiere on Netflix in early 2027.
