As the guest editor of the new issue of Wonderland magazine, Miley Cyrus used the opportunity not only to talk about the next chapter of her career, but to bring together people she admires, from Dolly Parton and Daryl Hannah to mother Tish Cyrus-Purcell and sister Noah Cyrus, as well as Kelela, Lykke Li, Sky Ferreira, 070 Shake, Towa Bird, Suzanne Vega, Tallulah Willis, Scout Willis, Phantogram, Model/Actriz, and others. In it, she talks at length about music, creativity and what future acting roles might look like.
Variety can also confirm that Cyrus has signed with Atlantic Records after releasing two albums on Columbia, including “Endless Summer Vacation” which featured her Grammy-winning smash “Flowers.”
The issue features a wide-ranging conversation between Cyrus — who appeared on the cover of Variety earlier this year — and Daryl Hannah, in which she talks about music, a possible return to acting, growing up in public and more.
She spoke in general terms about the next chapter of her musical career. “For me, a song isn’t just chords, melody, and lyrics. It’s a feeling,” she said. “It’s not right or wrong like an answer. It’s alive. It almost becomes its own little entity that tells you what it needs if you’re listening. I love making records with people who aren’t precious about ideas. Everyone is there because they’re excited by the same thing. There’s no ego in the room when it’s working. Just curiosity. It’s really special to be surrounded by people who want to surprise each other and are comfortable throwing an idea away or expanding on it.”
Asked by Hannah about her favorite part of making music, Cyrus replied, “I love feeling aligned with my purpose, my power, and my gifts. I feel closest to something bigger than myself when records flow through me. It’s almost impossible to describe. It’s like waking up from a dream you can still feel in your body even though you can’t fully explain it logically. Songwriting feels like crossing over to another side sometimes. A new song can feel like I’ve already heard it before.

“Even if it isn’t finished yet, I somehow know exactly what it is, almost like I’m remembering it instead of creating it,” she concluded. “That’s the mystery I love.”
Asked by Hannah about the possibility of future acting or directing roles, Cyrus said, “Well…That’s partly why I wanted to get in touch. I’d genuinely love to do both. My dream has always been to work with artists I admire, and you’re one of them. I think we’d make magic together, Daryl. I have an idea. Call me.’”
She was also asked by makeup artist James Kaliardos who or what would be her dream character to play in a film.
“Violence is everywhere, and there’s a beauty in darkness, but I’d love to disappear into something deeply romantic,” she said. “The kind of love we dream about, but with real stakes. A good old Shakespearean tragedy would be hot – a punk-rock Juliet. Something fierce and heartbreakingly romantic.”
