Timothée Chalamet won the first Golden Globe of his career for playing a hustling ping-pong phenom in the frenetic comedy “Marty Supreme.”
Chalamet has been nominated four times in the past, for his breakout role in “Call Me By Your Name,” addiction drama “Beautiful Boy,” musical comedy “Wonka” and last year’s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown.” He walked away from those ceremonies without a trophy, making it all the more meaningful that he’s finally a winner at Sunday night’s ceremony.
“My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up. ‘Always be grateful for what you have.’ It’s allowed me to leave the ceremony in the past empty handed with my head held high,” Chalamet said. “I’d be lying if I said those moments didn’t make this moment that much sweeter.”
Directed by Josh Safdie, “Marty Supreme” follows the fictional Marty Mauser as he goes through the wringer to pursue his dream of becoming a table-tennis champ. Chalamet thanked his director and co-stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher.
“Josh Safdie, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for this role. Thank you for believing in me,” Chalamet continued in his speech. “To A24 and Ronnie Bronstein, who cowrote this with Josh, the amazing cast of this film. If you would have told me when I was 19 years old that I would be thanking Mr. Wonderful from ‘Shark Tank’…”
After O’Leary, who plays a shrewd businessman in “Marty Supreme” cracked a smile, Chalamet let out a laugh and said to the “Shark Tank” star: “You are laughing, so I got away with that.” Finishing his earlier train of thought, Chalamet said, “I would have been stunned, but I would have been very grateful.”
Beyond his starring role, Chalamet has been a one-man marketing machine, going to great lengths — and heights — to get out the word about the original film. He’s captured the attention of the social media masses by gifting his famous friends the viral 1950s-esque windbreaker, flying a Nickelodeon-orange blimp around the country, climbing to the top of the Sphere in Las Vegas. All of the promotional efforts have worked: “Marty Supreme” has earned $84 million at the global box office and counting.

Chalamet was nominated in the lead actor in a musical or comedy category against George Clooney (“Jay Kelly”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”), Lee Byung-Hun (“No Other Choice”) and Jesse Plemons (“Bugonia”). Despite the competition — Chalamet noted “this category is stacked” during his speech — he’s been the odds on favorite to win the Globe after receiving universal praise and earning precursor awards at ceremonies including the Critics Choice.
During his speech at the Critics Choice Awards, Chalamet went viral for giving a shoutout to his longtime girlfriend Kylie Jenner.
“Thank you to my partner for three years. I love you. I couldn’t do this without you,” he said when accepting the best actor trophy. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Chalamet ended his Globes speech with another nod to Jenner, as well as his family: “To my parents and my partner, I love you. Thank you so much.”
