Joseph Kosinski is in early talks with Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler to star in his big-screen reboot of “Miami Vice.” Speaking at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards, Kosinski, who was there to present to the “F1” sound team, opened up about why the two would be an ideal fit for their respective roles.
“Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time, [and] always wanted to work with him. Austin, I think, is proving himself as someone to watch. Again, I’ve just have really admired his choices,” he said. “If it ends up being those two, I’d be very lucky.”
As previously reported, Jordan would play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Butler would play James “Sonny” Crockett.
Kosinski, the director behind this summer’s “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” also confirmed “the film takes place in 1985.” Teasing the film’s period looks, he added, “It’s full on.”
His and Universal Pictures’ “Miami Vice” was first revealed in April, with a release date set for Aug. 6, 2027. The movie is based on the 1980s TV series, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives in South Florida.
According to an official logline, the reboot “explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”
Dylan Clark and Kosinski serve as producers, while Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy penned the script. Production is expected to begin next year, and the movie will be filmed for Imax.
