It may have taken almost 30 years for the sequel to “Practical Magic” to happen, but the cast was already thinking about a followup when they shot the first one.
“When we were making it, we definitely did,” Nicole Kidman told me Thursday night at the Season 2 premiere of her Hulu series, “Nine Perfect Strangers.” “We’re so excited. Yes, yes, beyond excited. You heard our spell. We put out our spell already.”
Warner Bros. announced earlier this month that the second movie will be released in 2026 with Kidman returning along with co-star Sandra Bullock. The studio released a text-only teaser with a voiceover from Bullock and Kidman, who chant, “Tooth of wolf and morning dew. Something old and something new. Let the spell begin to mix. Sept. 18, 2026.”
Bullock and Kidman are reprising their roles as sisters and witches Sally and Gillian Owens, who find themselves fighting off a curse that kills the men they fall in love with. It was based on Alice Hoffman’s novel.
Susanne Bier is directing “Practical Magic 2” from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the first movie.
Kidman told me in February that the sequel is “moving ahead rapidly.” As for shoot dates for the sequel, she said Thursday, “Not for a while.”
The sequel’s storyline is being kept under wraps.
“Practical Magic” has become a cult favorite following mixed reviews and a poor performance at the box office. Warner Bros. announced a prequel series, “Rules of Magic,” in 2019 but the HBO project was scrapped before it even began.
