The Gold Coast is about to open the gates to Middle-earth.
“The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale” touches down at HOTA (Home of the Arts) for a limited season, running from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 20.
For the first time in South East Queensland, fans of all ages can join Frodo and the Fellowship on their perilous quest to destroy the One Ring — right here on the Gold Coast.
Already a hit across the UK, US and New Zealand, the show’s Australian tour kicked off in January 2025, with the Gold Coast premiere set for July4, perfectly timed for the winter school holidays.
Hailed by The Guardian as “the greatest show on Middle-earth,” and by the NZ Herald as “the most thrilling and immersive take on Middle-earth yet,” this epic musical brings Tolkien’s world to life with stunning visuals, soaring music and a powerhouse Australian cast, including Jemma Rix as Galadriel, Ian Stenlake as Saruman, Rob Mallett as Strider and Rarmian Newton as Frodo Baggins.

The score is massive, with contributions from Academy Award-winner A.R. Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”), Finnish folk icons Värttinä and Tony Award-winner Christopher Nightingale (“Matilda the Musical”). It’s a reinvention of the classic tale, offering a musical journey that’s as moving as it is magical.
The show has earned more rave reviews, with WhatsOnStage calling it “an extraordinary retelling,” Broadway World praising its “epic and fantastical” visuals, and Chicago Review hailing it as “ensemble storytelling at its very best.”
“We all know how popular ‘The Lord of the Rings’ has been, and now we get to experience the epic story live on stage right here at HOTA. It’s another Queensland exclusive for the Gold Coast, so don’t miss the chance to journey to Middle-earth,” says Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.
“We are thrilled to be bringing this epic stage production to HOTA in an exclusive Queensland season. It’s thrilling to see the incredible development of the dynamic arts and entertainment scene on the Gold Coast, and we look forward to bringing many more major productions here in the future,” adds Torben Brookman from GWB Entertainment.
So don’t miss your chance to journey through the Shire, face the forces of Mordor, and get swept up in a musical adventure for the ages.
