Disney+ has announced that the Oscar-nominated Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown,” will premiere on the platform this month.
The company has confirmed that the film, starring Timothée Chalamet as the music icon during his rise in the 1960s, will hit the service on Wednesday, May 7.
Following its worldwide cinema release last December, “A Complete Unknown” went on to be a commercial and critical hit, scoring eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for Chalamet, Best Director for James Mangold and Best Picture, as well as three Golden Globe nominations.
It also took out a number of awards at local ceremonies, while Chalamet won the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this past February.
Dylan himself praised Chalamet, writing in a tweet ahead of the film’s release: “Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me. The film’s taken from Elijah Wald’s Dylan Goes Electric – a book that came out in 2015. It’s a fantastic retelling of events from the early ‘60s that led up to the fiasco at Newport. After you’ve seen the movie read the book.”
Variety also gave the film a positive review, including Chalamet’s performance.
“Chalamet’s Bob doesn’t say much; he tends to speak in gnomic five-word sentences. But that’s because, in his mind, he has already cut through the malarkey that is human communication,” it reads.
“He doesn’t have much use for it. He’s plugged into something more timeless. And Chalamet rises to the challenge of capturing the prickly charisma of Dylan’s inchoate, anti-matter, read-between-the-lines personality. It’s a transfixing performance that’s true to Dylan and, just as important, true to the logic of movies. We stare at this young mystery man, who lights up a room when he sings, and like everyone around him we want to know what makes him tick.”
