Music industry legend Bob Geldof was in attendance at “MJ the Musical” in Sydney this week.

Currently in Australia for an “In conversation” tour, the Live Aid organiser headed to the Sydney Lyric Theatre on Wednesday night to watch the Tony Award-winning production and meet the cast after the show.

Geldof even spent time with the cast and crew sharing stories of working with the late King of Pop. Many will know the Irish songwriter was one of the organisers of the famous 1985 track, “We Are the World,” and was in the studio when Jackson sung his part in the track.

“Spectacular show. World class performance and production,” Geldof said of the Sydney production.

“I enjoyed every moment of every scene.”

Geldof’s visit came just days after Michael Jackson’s son, Prince, walked the red carpet for the Sydney premiere last weekend.

Other notable attendees at the premiere included the musical’s producer, Michael Cassel, as well as television personalities Samantha Armytage, Sonia Kruger, Kylie Gillies, and David Campbell. Musician-turned-Olympic swimmer Cody Simpson and members of The Wiggles were also in attendance.

“MJ the Musical” transports audiences back to 1992, offering a behind-the-scenes look at Jackson’s creative process as he prepares for his Dangerous World Tour. Written by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, the musical is framed around a fictional MTV interview, delving into both the dazzling spectacle and the personal struggles of the King of Pop.

The Australian production marks the fifth iteration of the Broadway hit since its debut in February 2022, following successful runs in London, Germany, and across the US.

Featuring more than 25 of Jackson’s greatest hits – including “Beat It,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Man in the Mirror,” and “Thriller” – the musical has been seen by over a million people worldwide. It has also earned four Tony Awards, including Best Choreography for Christopher Wheeldon OBE, who praised the Australian cast, led by US actor Roman Banks as Jackson.

“From the very first rehearsal, they have brought an incredible dedication, passion, and artistry to this production, making it their own while honouring Michael Jackson’s artistry and creativity,” he said. “Seeing ‘MJ’ come to life here in Sydney with such phenomenal talent has been an absolute joy. I am beyond thrilled that this show has found a home here.”

“MJ the Musical” is playing at the Sydney Lyric Theatre now. Due to overwhelming demand, the season has been extended to August 3rd. Click here for more details.
