Jeremy Allen White won the lead comedy actor Emmy on Sunday, recognizing his portrayal of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in Season 2 of FX’s “The Bear.” This is his second season in a row taking home the award.
“My heart is just beating right out of its chest,” White said upon taking the stage, accepting the trophy from “TV dad” presenters Damon Wayans, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and George Lopez. “Thank you, thank you to the Academy, my fellow nominees. I’m so honored to be in your company.”
“The Bear” star then turned his gratitude to “The Bear” heads Christopher Storer and Joanna Calo, as well as his co-stars. “Thank you for choosing me. I am so, so, so lucky. I’m so grateful. Thank you. My beautiful cast, I love you forever. I love to work with you, and I want us to be in each other’s lives forever. I love you so dearly.”
“Jo, this show has changed my life. It has instilled a faith that change is possible if you are able to reach out,” White continued in his Emmys speech. “You’re really, truly never actually alone. I thank this show.”
Though “The Bear” catapulted White to A-list status with its 2022 debut, White was previously known for starring as Philip “Lip” Gallagher in “Shameless,” which ran on Showtime for 11 seasons from 2011 to 2021. In 2023, he played Kerry Von Erich in the biographical drama film “The Iron Claw,” and up next, he’s set to play Bruce Springsteen in the biopic “Deliver Me From Nowhere.”
Also nominated for lead comedy actor were “Only Murders in the Building” stars Steve Martin and Martin Short as well as Larry David for “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Matt Berry for “What We Do in the Shadows” and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai for “Reservation Dogs.”
White’s win came just minutes after his co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach took home his second Emmy in the category of supporting comedy actor. “The Bear” is also nominated for best comedy series, lead comedy actress, comedy directing and comedy writing awards on Sunday.
