Nintendo and Illumination have unveiled a new trailer for “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” featuring Mario’s apple-loving dinosaur pal, Yoshi. The animated sequel premieres in April.
In the trailer, we see Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) help a small desert village unclog a pipe hidden deep in an ancient temple. After traversing an eerie dungeon, they find the faulty plumbing and dislodge the blockage. And waiting for the brothers, hiding behind a pile of jagged rubble, is their future companion Yoshi.
Yoshi’s first appearance in the Mario franchise came with the 1990 release of the NES classic “Super Mario World.” In that game, and all other Mario platformers since, Yoshi serves as a rideable mount, giving the player access to the iconic tongue attack. Yoshi also gives players an extra hit, as well as enhanced mobility. Yoshi can also be used as a pseudo double-jump to get across extra-long gaps, that is, if a player is heartless enough to drop their dinosaur pal into whatever abyss they’re so eager to cross. Yoshi’s first standalone game was 1995’s “Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island.” That game saw an entire species of multicolored Yoshi tasked with protecting baby Mario and saving baby Luigi from the clutches of the evil wizard Kamek. “Yoshi’s Island” was the first game to feature Yoshi’s egg-throwing and iconic flutter-jump abilities.
The first “Super Mario Bros. Movie” was released in April of 2023, and went on to gross $1.36 billion at the worldwide box office. The film is currently the fifth-highest-grossing animated movie of all time and the 19th highest grosser of all films. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” starred Pratt as Mario, Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” based on the 2007 Wii game “Super Mario Galaxy,” sees Horvath and Jelenic return as directors. New cast members include Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. and Brie Larson as Rosalina. Plot specifics remain underwraps.
