The cast and filmmakers of Warner Bros. Pictures’ highly anticipated “Mortal Kombat” sequel are coming to Australia.

The special promotional tour will kick off on May 4th with a fan screening of “Mortal Kombat II” at IMAX Sydney, followed by the official Australian preview event on May 5th on the Gold Coast, ahead of the film’s release.

The tour celebrates the franchise’s strong ties to Australia, which was filmed extensively on the Gold Coast and backed by Screen Queensland. The sequel is once again directed by Australian filmmaker Simon McQuoid, who returns following the success of the 2021 original. Production also drew heavily on Queensland’s screen industry, with a predominantly local crew contributing to the film’s high-octane action and visual style.

Leading the cast on the tour is Kiwi actor Karl Urban, who joins the franchise as fan-favourite character Johnny Cage. He is joined by returning Australian stars Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson, reprising their roles as Sonya Blade and Kano. They are also joined by Chin Han as Shang Tsung, alongside fellow Australian cast members Ana Thu Nguyen and CJ Bloomfield, further highlighting the film’s local representation.

Per the synopsis, “Mortal Kombat II” follows Johnny Cage and other fighters in the “ultimate, no-holds-barred battle” to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn, a powerful tyrant who threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney said the project underscores the state’s growing reputation as a global production hub. “Our agency is proud to support ‘Mortal Kombat II’ and showcase Queensland as a world-class destination for major international productions,” she said. “This feature highlights the exceptional skills of our local crews and reinforces the State’s reputation as a hub for global screen storytelling.

“The trust that Warner Bros. and New Line place in Queensland as a preferred filming destination is something we don’t take lightly and we are delighted to welcome them back to the sunshine state for the official Australian preview.”

Following the fan events, “Mortal Kombat II” will arrive in Australian cinemas on May 7th.

Urban will also be in Sydney next week to celebrate the final season of Prime Video’s “The Boys”, in which he plays Billy Butcher.
