Bill Maher told the newly-launched California Post that Hollywood celebrities need to “shut the fuck up” when it comes to politics if the Democratic party wants to have even a shot at reclaiming the White House in future elections.
“Hollywood [is] sort of the epicenter of the woke left. I don’t think they’re doing the Democratic Party any favors,” the “Real Time” host said. “I think if Democrats want to win elections in the future, job one, tell the celebrities to ‘Just shut the fuck up. You’re not helping. You don’t strike people in most of the country as sensible or in touch with reality.’”
Maher is often outspoken against the Hollywood left, and he’s previously blamed them for his continued awards losses in the industry. Maher’s “Club Random” was a Golden Globe nominee this year for best podcast but lost to Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang.” Prior to the ceremony, Maher predicted he would lose.
“Sweetheart, I’ve been nominated for 33 Emmys, and they would never give it to me,” Maher told his guest. “That’s not a gag number. That’s a real number. It’s crazy… it’s [because of] everything I said. I speak freely, and this woke town fucking hates that. And that’s okay. I’ve made my peace with that. So I know how this goes. This is not something I would ever … I have good standing. If I win this by some miracle, to go what people always say, ‘I can’t believe it, I’m shocked.’ I really should be shocked.”
HBO recently renewed “Real Time With Bill Maher” for two additional seasons, extending the political talk series through 2028 on HBO. The show returned on Jan. 23 for its Season 24 premiere. Maher has hosted “Real Time” since 2003.
