Steven Mnuchin, the former Hollywood producer who served as Treasury Secretary during President Trump’s first term, has joined the Lionsgate Studios’ board of directors effective immediately.
Mnuchin has amassed an ownership stake in Lionsgate through his Liberty Strategic Capital investment company. In May 2025, Liberty Strategic Capital upped its stake in Lionsgate Studios to 12.6%.
Mnuchin’s appointment to the Lionsgate board is subject to a one-year “standstill” provision, under which Liberty Strategic Capital has agreed to not acquire (either directly or indirectly) more than 17.5% of Lionsgate Studios’ shares, per an SEC filing Monday by the entertainment company. The same standstill restriction applies to MHR Fund Management, which is controlled by Mark Rachesky, chairman of Lionsgate’s board of directors.
In announcing his appointment to the board, Lionsgate said that Mnuchin “brings deep financial and regulatory expertise” from his tenure as Treasury Secretary, as well as “entertainment industry experience from his leadership at Dune Capital Management,” a hedge fund he founded and led as CEO that focused on entertainment industry investments.
Mnuchin, who has more than 35 executive producer credits, including having co-financed James Cameron’s “Avatar.” Mnuchin is currently managing partner of Liberty Strategic Capital. Earlier, he served as as a partner at Goldman Sachs; chair of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS); and was a member of the National Security Council.
“Steven brings a long record of public and private sector leadership and is an exceptional addition to the Lionsgate Board,” Rachesky said in a statement. “His steady judgment, global perspective and deep industry insights will be enormously valuable as Lionsgate continues to grow as one of the world’s leading pure-play content studios. Steven and his fund are significant Lionsgate investors, and his interests are aligned with those of Lionsgate shareholders. I and the rest of the Board look forward to working closely with him on the creation of further shareholder value.”
Mnuchin commented: “I have long admired Lionsgate’s creativity, entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to excel in a competitive industry. I am pleased to join the company’s board. Lionsgate’s board and management team are building something dynamic and forward looking, and I am eager to support that momentum. I look forward to helping guide the company in combining strong vision with disciplined execution.”
