John Lithgow is in final talks to play Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books.

Variety has confirmed Lithgow’s contention for the role with sources, though HBO commented: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

In the “Harry Potter” books and film adaptations, Dumbledore is the caring but mysterious headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is an elderly and powerful wizard who mentors Harry in his fight against the Dark Lord Voldemort. Richard Harris played Dumbledore in the first two “Harry Potter” films, while Michael Gambon took over the role after Harris’ death.

Lithgow, a beloved actor for decades, is known for films including “The World According to Garp,” “Terms of Endearment” and “Footloose” and series such as “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Dexter” and “The Crown.” More recently, he has appeared in FX’s “The Old Man” and Focus Features’ “Conclave.”

Along with Lithgow, the cast may include Paapa Essiedu, who is reportedly a top contender to play potions professor Severus Snape. Harry, Hermione and Ron — the trio of main characters — will likely be played by newcomers; Warner Bros. launched an open casting call for kids aged between 9 and 11 in the fall of 2024.

HBO has described its “Harry Potter” as “a faithful adaptation” that “will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters ‘Harry Potter’ fans have loved for over twenty-five years.” The series is planned to run over the course of a decade with the intention of introducing new audiences to the story while the films, which were released between 2001 and 2011, “remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

Deadline was first to report on Lithgow’s casting.
