Eddie Izzard has announced she will bring her “The Tragedy of Hamlet” show to Australia in 2026.

About to embark on a stand-up tour of the country next week, the Emmy Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated performer will bring the one-person performance to our shores in June 2026 after sold-out seasons in the US and UK.

Adapted by Mark Izzard and directed by Selina Cadell, the production sees Izzard embody all 23 characters of the Shakespeare tragedy: “The King of Denmark is dead and Prince Hamlet is determined to take revenge, initiating a cascade of events that will destroy both family and state. Eddie will be portraying men, women, ghosts, scholars, tyrants, courtiers, lovers, fools and poets.”

“I have always gravitated towards playing complex and demanding characters,” Izzard said, “and Hamlet is the pinnacle.

“This production is for everyone – a timeless drama with an accidental hero. Selina, Mark and I want audiences to see and hear an accessible, touching, scary and dramatic Hamlet.”

The run will kick off at the Sydney Opera House in June 2026, followed by runs at the Brisbane Powerhouse, Melbourne Arts Centre and Perth’s Heath Ledger Theatre.

Izzard’s career spans 35 years of comedy tours and acclaimed film, TV and theatre performances. Beyond the stage, she’s taken part in marathon running and even politics. She made her stage debut in 1993 for “Live at the Ambassadors,” which saw her receive an Olivier Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement.

That was followed by several critically acclaimed shows: “Unrepeatable,” “Definite Article,” “Glorious,” “Dress to Kill,” “Circle,” “Sexie and Stripped,” “Force Majeure” and “Wunderbar.” “Force Majeure” was one of the largest comedy tours in history, playing in over 45 countries and in all 50 US states. A staunch supporter of the European Union, she tours in four languages — English, French, German and Spanish.
