Charlie Brooker is taking a break from his “Black Mirror” duties with Netflix to embark on something a little different at the streamer: a four-part detective series.
Now in production, the ‘Untitled Charlie Brooker Project’ (unsurprisingly, a working title) is described in the logline as a “profoundly serious, stunningly original crime thriller in which a tormented detective from the Northern city of Bleakford ventures down to London on a mission to catch a ritualistic serial killer before they run out of people to kill.” It warns that the show “contains blood and frowning.”
Leading the limited series will be Paddy Considine (“House of the Dragon,” “MobLand”), Georgina Campbell (“Barbarian,” “Watchers”) and Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones,” “The Abandons”). “Black Mirror” fans will likely spot that Campbell is an alumnus, having starred in the much-loved episode “Hang the DJ.”
“I’m beyond thrilled to be saying these words for the press release. I’ve dreamt of providing a quote ever since I was a young foetus, and now here I am doing it,” said Brooker. “I’d pinch myself, but like all of us, I’m terrified that if I do that, I might wake up and discover 2025 has all been a magical dream. Please watch my show. I am begging you.”
Brooker created the series, which he wrote alongside Ben Caudell, Jason Hazeley, Emer Kenny, Daniel Maier and Joel Morris. Victoria Asare Archer provided additional material. Longtime Brooker collaborator Al Campbell (“Screenwipe,” “Newswipe, “Death To 2020”) will direct.
Richard Webb produces, while Brooker, Jessica Rhoades and Annabel Jones exec producer. Mark Kinsella co-exec produces.
The as-yet-untitled series isn’t Brooker’s first foray into the world of crime drama. He co-created Sky’s police procedural satire “A Touch of Cloth,” starring John Hannah and Suranne Jones, which ran across three seasons from 2012-2014.
