The “Weekend Update” segment at the “SNL” 50th anniversary special on Sunday brought back legendary cast member Bill Murray to rank the segment’s past hosts.
Murray started by ranking “Weekend Update’s” Black hosts, which put current co-host Michael Che at number one — by virtue of the fact there has only been one Black host in the show’s history.
Murray then went through a top 10 ranking of the “regular” hosts of “Weekend Update.” Murray immediately took himself out of the running for the ranking, due to the fact he was on performance enhacing drugs. “It’s what we called an ‘8H Shaker,’” Murray said. “Quaaludes, cocaine, and Nighttime TheraFlu.”
Colin Quinn came in at number 10, followed by Kevin Nealon, Dennis Miller, and Seth Meyers. “I’m gonna put Tina and Amy just ahead of Tina and Jimmy,” Murray continued. “Jimmy, I’m sorry, and congratulations Tina. It was close but I looked online and girl on girl is still very popular.”
“Next up, Cornelius Crane Chase, who we’ve all come to know as Conny,” Murray said. “Let’s face it. ‘Weekend Update’ would simply not exist without him, so it would be wrong to have him listed anywhere but number four.”
Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd came in at number three, followed by Norm Macdonald. And at number one, Murray continually teased that Colin Jost would be on the list. The number one entry on the list was described as “funny, he’s got a great smile, and he’s currently sleeping every kind of way with the lovely actress Scarlett Johansson — my brother, Brian Doyle-Murray!”
Earlier in the segment, Bobby Moynihan reprised his Drunk Uncle character for his take on current events. “Oh great, we’re in a brave new world!” he lamented. “Not my Captain America!” When Jost tried to rein him in, Drunk Uncle grabbed Jost forcefully, actually ripping at least one button off his suit jacket.
“So I’m not Land Shark, ok?” he continued, referencing the recurring “SNL” character from the 1970s. “So I’m not Brian Fellows Safari Planet, ok? So I’m not musical guest Timothée Chalamet! Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Cheeseburger!”
“Right, from the ’70s,” Jost interjected. “No, I misplaced four cheeseburgers!” Drunk Uncle responded.
