A fictional studio head has broken the Emmy record.
Apple TV+ continues its awards season dominance as its freshman comedy series “The Studio” shattered records Tuesday, receiving 23 Emmy nominations — the most ever for a comedy series in its first season. It also tied the record set by “The Bear” last year, as the most nominated comedy series ever.
The previous record was set in 2021 by “Ted Lasso,” another Apple TV+ production, which scored 20 nominations during its debut year. That series went on to win seven Emmys, including three for acting (Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham) and outstanding comedy series.
Created by Evan Goldberg, Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, Frida Perez and Seth Rogen — who also directed, wrote and star in the series — “The Studio” follows an embattled Hollywood studio head struggling to balance corporate demands with his passion for producing quality films. The ensemble cast also includes Catherine O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders and Kathryn Hahn.
The series received nominations in major categories, including four individual nominations for Rogen — outstanding comedy series, lead actor, writing, and directing. If he wins all four, he would tie the record for most Emmys won by a single individual in one night, joining Moira Demos for Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” (2016), Amy Sherman-Palladino for Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (2018) and Dan Levy for Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek” (2020).
“The Studio” has solidified itself as a potential frontrunner for the comedy series statuette.
In her review of “The Studio,” Variety chief TV critic Alison Herman called the show “a lavish spectacle.”
With the success of “The Studio,” Apple TV+ continues to cement its reputation as a major player in prestige television, particularly in the comedy space. The platform’s growing critical acclaim mirrors the rise of other streaming services that have reshaped the awards landscape in recent years.

This year’s Emmy nominations were announced by actors Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”) and Brenda Song (“Running Point”) from the Academy’s Wolf Theatre.
The 77th Emmy Awards will be hosted by Nate Bargatze and broadcast live Sunday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS, as well as stream live and on demand via select packages on Paramount+.
