After winning the world over through the “Welcome to Wrexham” documentary, the football club could be coming to Australia in the near future.
In an Australian exclusive chat with Rolling Stone AU/NZ to promote the new season of his Apple TV+ series, “Mythic Quest,” show co-creator and star Rob McElhenney teased the possibility of bringing the Welsh team he co-owns with Ryan Reynolds to Australia in the near future.
“Maybe we go on an international tour with a certain club to a certain continent?” McElhenney said.
“Our third biggest… audience for ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ is Australia. No. 1 US, No. 2 UK, No 3. is Australia, which I find fascinating.”
First released on Disney+ in 2021, “Welcome to Wrexham” follows McElhenney and Reynolds’ purchase of one of professional football’s oldest clubs and their rise to success, including two successive promotions. The latest season hit screens last year, while a fourth season is set to premiere later this year.
Buoyed by the star power of McElhenney and Reynolds, Wrexham have embarked on international trips for friendly matches in recent years against teams in the US Major League Soccer competition, as well as against football juggernauts like Manchester United and Chelsea.
However, an Australian trip would be a first for the club founded all the way back in 1864.
“There is a lot of love for Wrexham [in Australia],” McElhenney continued. “Who knows? Maybe we might bring the club to you instead of the other way around.”
When pressed on if he had dates in mind for a potential trip to local shores, McElhenney responded with a laugh: “No. In fact, the second you print that, I’m going to get a signal or a text from someone who’s gonna go ‘What is wrong with you and why did you do that?'”
Season four of “Mythic Quest” is available to watch on Apple TV+ now.
