“Happy Gilmore 2” continues to break streaming records.
According to Nielsen Streaming data, the long-gestating comedy sequel was the number one most streamed movie for the week of July 21-27 with 2.9 billion viewing minutes, with the movie having launched on Netflix on July 25.
With that viewership, it has set the record for the largest single-week viewing total for a movie in the history of Nielsen’s streaming top 10. The previous record was “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” which nabbed 2.2 billion minutes when it debuted in December 2023.
It also marked the best opening streaming week for an Adam Sandler film to date. Per Nielsen, Sandler’s movies have genereated over 61 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix. He has starred in nearly a dozen original movies for Netflix, including “Murder Mystery,” “Hubie Halloween” and “The Week Of.”
Netflix previously reported that “Happy Gilmore 2” drew 46.7 million views over its first three days on the platform, with views defined as total hours watched divided by the total runtime. That was the biggest U.S. opening weekend of all time for a Netflix film, as well as the best ever for one of Sandler’s movies. The film has been on the Netflix Top 10 chart for the past four weeks and counting.
“Happy Gilmore 2” arrived nearly 30 years after the 1996 film, which generated $40 million at the box office and helped to cement Sandler as one of the biggest comedy stars of his generation.
Along with Sandler, the film saw the return of original stars Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald while new cast members included Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce and Sandler’s real-life wife and kids — Jackie, Sunny and Sadie.
