“Hey Hey It’s Saturday” will have another one-off special to celebrate its legacy.
The variety show turned 50 last year, an occasion which was marked by the anniversary special “Hey Hey It’s 50 Years”.
Now, six months later, the show will be back again, with a special titled “Hey Hey It’s 100 Years”. It’s not yet clear where the additional 50 years has come from.
This “Hey Hey” special will once again be hosted by Daryl Somers.
Somers fronted the program when it kicked off on Channel 9 in 1971 all the way through to 1999. He was also at the helm when it was revived in 2009 by the Nine Network, and when the Seven Network brought it back for the 50th special last year.
This year’s special will be dedicated to the late Ernie Carroll who featured on the program as Ossie Ostrich, Somer’s puppet sidekick.
Carroll died on Mar. 30, aged 92.
The program will also feature tributes to the late Shane Warne, the iconic Australian cricketer who died on Mar. 4, and John Edward Szeles aka The Amazing Jonathan, the comedian and musician who died on Feb. 22.
“Hey Hey It’s 100 Years” will also sport guest appearances from the original Wiggles, Delta Goodrem, Kate Ceberano, Lee Kernaghan and Tommy Emanuel. Seven said there will be “a cavalcade of stars who appeared on the original series” of “Hey Hey It’s Saturday”.
Somers will also explore some of his funniest memories and revive segments including Red Faces and Celebrity Head.
“Hey Hey It’s 50 Years” had an overnight metro audience of 1.224 million last year on Channel 7. With the addition of regional viewers, the show had 1.88 million viewers, according to its overnight figures.
The Seven Network said this figure had since climbed to 2.11 million, making the fifth most-watched entertainment program of last year.
